12/19/22 - 12/25/22
In the last week (even with the holidays), I’m building more and more confidence with my club face at impact.
How?
Simple. I’m putting in the work.
For the last 14 days, I’ve either played Golf, swung a driver hard AF 20 times, had a range session on the simulator or practiced slow swings for clubface control at impact 13 out 14 days. That’s big for me because I’m not normally that consistent.
I’ve always heard ‘it takes 21 days to build a habit’ and I’ll admit that I would nearly throw in the towel if I had to miss a day. But recently I came across a different viewpoint about building a habit - just don’t miss 2 days in a row.
That’s been a game changer for my mindset.
The Plan
My plan for this week was to:
Continue Heel and Toe work with Mid Irons
Find a chipping stroke that I can be confident with
Make space in my garage for full Driver swings
Result: 66% completed
Driver Swings
Been reading Fit for Golf’s blog about driver swing speed and while I’m not ready to commit to The Stack or Speed Sticks, Mike put out a challenge to just swing your driver as hard as possible for 10-15 swings daily.
I don’t have a way to measure the club head speed on my Garmin R10 without a ball, but I can assure you I’m whipping that thing hard AF. If anyone has a way to measure Club Head speed without having to hit a ball, drop a comment and let me know please.
I decided to do 20 swings versus the recommended 10-15 because I figured I have some ground to makeup and I want to get there faster.
Heel and Toe Practice
I had 3 indoor simulator range sessions this week solely focused on striking the ball either on the heel or toe. Here’s what I did to make it interesting:
Spray foot powder to see stroke location
alternate toe and heel strikes
10 balls
2 points for successful strike
1 additional point for “feeling it make contact there”
-1 point for miss hit
Round 1 Score:
Round 2 Score:
Round 3 Score:
As you can see, I got gradually better from Round 1 to Round but still have a long way to go.
The other 2 practice sessions were very similar and nothing to write home about so I won’t bother with the screenshots. My main takeaways are:
It’s not boring and gives me a little pressure on each shot
Despite my scores not being amazing, I’m actually starting to ‘feel’ which way it hit the clubface.
Chipping
I simply ran out of time to be able to work on this area due to the holidays, but I’ve got it on my list of to-dos for next week.
Reflections
Now that I’m rolling on this habit train, I’m just not trying to break the streak. I feel like the 2 day rule provides a flexible enough framework to take care of family or work needs without giving me the feeling like I’m throwing in the towel.
I’m also feeling a bit more enthusiastic about this journey as I feel like I’m developing a better sense of how the clubface is going to impact the ball. I know it’s still really early, but my confidence is growing.
Next Steps
I bit the bullet and now have Mr. Adam Young as my coach. He’s got a few of my swing videos and will be putting together and analysis as well as a practice plan to should get me to single digits. More to come there and don’t you worry, I’ll bring you every step of the way. So hit the subscribe button to see what Adam put together for me.
Until then, make everyone putt it out. There’s Zero Putts Given out here.
Good stuff. Keep grinding.
I bit the bullet and got a PRGR along with Super Speed golf sticks. A little disappointing in my speed so far. Best I can do is 91 mph with the lightest stick.
Also, it looked like you are much better finding the Toe rather than the Heel. Why do you think that is?
Keep it up!
